Hand Painted Silk Scarves
Hand painted silk scarves can be a great gift for any lady. Of course some silk scarves, like the famous Hermes brand, can be expensive. Prices of $400 US and more are not unusual. Needless to say most people consider these scarves to be very beautiful, but there are not many people who can afford to pay those kinds of prices, especially if a woman would like a variety of scarves to change up her look and her wardrobe.
Fortunately there are some solutions to this problem and some places where hand painted silk scarves can be found at remarkably low prices. My favorite is Scarves by Linda, a web site run by an artist who learned to paint on silk while living in France about 25 years ago. She offers a large variety of scarves, and for less than $40 one can purchase a 15 x 60 inch scarf. For a bit less money one can get square scarves, and these are 22 x 22 inches.
Linda uses several different silk painting techniques on her scarves, and all these are on display at her site. Her most popular scarves are made using a salt resist technique. This technique can be used with any color imaginable, and Linda has come up with some great color combinations. In fact the absorption of color is one of the most important properties of silk, as anyone who has seen the bright colors used on Hermes scarves. After dying each scarf by hand, Linda puts them onto a specially made frame to keep it stretched out, and she puts a form of rock salt over the surface. The salt actually absorbs some of the colored dyes, and the result is a wonderful and artistic looking texture that actually makes each scarf unique. So not only are these scarves an amazingly low price for such a classy looking item, each one is unique and different.
In fact Linda says that she could not make two exactly alike if she tried because there is no way to apply the salt on the painted silk fabric in exactly the same way twice. Other techniques she uses include batik and actual painting on silk with a brush. You can see examples of all of these by clicking here.
Silk has been used and admired for over 5,000 years. The Chinese invented the techniques to unravel silk cocoons and use them for fabrics, and they kept these techniques a secret for about 2,000 years before the knowledge leaked out to other people and other countries.
Although automation has been introduced into the silk industry, raising silk worms and turning the silk into fabric is still a labor intensive process, so most silk these days is made in locations where labor costs are relatively low. China is still the leader in silk production just as it was thousands of years ago. As the low prices at Scarves by Linda will attest, high quality silk scarves can in fact be obtained for modest prices and are thus available to almost every woman. And having a scarf that is unique and hand painted by a professional artist makes wearing one even more special.
Shop around and check out the variety of hand painted silk scarves that are available- you might be surprised to find great gifts at surprisingly modest prices.
