The Properties of Silk
The first records of silk and silk production go back 5,000 years to China. The Chinese zealously guarded the secrets of making silk for almost 2,000 years until the knowledge to make silk, as well as eggs of silkworms were eventually smuggled out of the country along the famous silk road.
One of the most obvious properties of silk is that it accepts dyes very well, and thus silk products often come in bright colors and designs. Many types of garments for women are made of silk including dresses, scarves and shawls. Many men also like to wear silk ties.
Silk is a material that is luxurious looking and has been used by royalty for many centuries. Even today in England there are small factories that produce silk which is used to make clothing for royal weddings. Also in England when an attorney, or solicitor as they are called there, reaches a certain status level then he or she is said to “take silk”, and they wear silk garments from then on in courtroom proceedings. Silk has been a symbol of wealth and power for many centuries in cultures all over the world.
Silk is light in weight and very flexible. It can be stretched up to about 20-25% and it will immediately go back to its former size and shape. It can be pulled through a small area, like perhaps through a wedding ring, and it will not wrinkle much if at all. Silk is also amazingly strong, and it has been used in rope making to take advantage of these properties.
Silk is a fabric that makes people feel cool in the summer and yet it is also used to line clothing and provide warmth in the winter. Silk and silk scarves are excellent for travelling, especially for women, as they can take three or four lightweight scarves on a trip and change the look of outfits just by wearing a different scarf. In that way a woman does not have to carry as much clothing as she otherwise might.
Silk is of course a natural material that comes from silkworms, or more specifically the Bombyx mori silkworm, or B. mori as it is commonly referred to. The silk fibers are extruded by the worm when it ready to make a cocoon and eventually change into a moth. Only enough moths are produced to lay eggs for the next generation of silkworms. B. mori silkworms are no longer found in the wild, as they are all domesticated and are used in the production of silk. They eat only one thing, the leaves of mulberry trees. When it comes time to make its cocoon, the worm produces one long continuous thread and wraps it around itself. The silk fiber is typically about a kilometer long for each silkworm. There are different types of wild silkworms that exist, and in India silk fiber is produced from some of them. Most of that silk has a rougher texture than that produced by B. mori. Synthetic fabrics like rayon have long been made to try and duplicate the texture and feel of silk, but there is nothing quite like the original.
